The Name

Walking on Cape Cod with my wife in 2018, discussing my decision to leave ADP after twenty-four years. I needed a company name—something cloud-related, but most were taken. She asked, "Well, what's the word for when you see things in a cloud?"

I looked it up. Told her, "I can learn to spell that."

Pareidolia: when you see a face in the clouds, or hear your name being called when it's not. A fancy word for hallucination.

Turns out it was perfect. We're all facing hallucination—in clouds, in patterns, in systems claiming to be fundamentally different when they're running the same cycles we've seen before. Now, in AI.

The Research

Pareidolia is a research and development company.

We study a specific phenomenon: how human intent degrades as it moves through layers of translation, delegation, abstraction, and autonomy. This is not an AI problem. It is a systems problem that AI makes more visible and more urgent.

Three decades building enterprise systems revealed the pattern. It appeared in cloud migrations, where governance was deferred until failure forced it. It appeared in workforce hierarchies, where leadership intent degraded through layers of management into outcomes that contradicted the original objective. It appeared in autonomous agents, where models followed every instruction while violating the purpose those instructions were meant to serve.

The infrastructure changed each time. The pattern didn't.

The Thesis

That recurring pattern became the subject of formal study. The result is Governance Fidelity Theory—a framework for understanding how intent survives or degrades in delegated and autonomous systems.

GFT led to a series of related research areas: Authority Architecture (structural systems that create consequences outside the model), Earned Authority (mechanisms by which autonomous systems gain or lose operational latitude), Institutional Memory (how organizations encode and transmit intent across time), and Governance Drift (the measurable distance between stated intent and observed outcomes).

The research is protected by a portfolio of 12 patents covering multi-agent orchestration, authority architecture, governance scoring, and standards lifecycle management.

The Companies

Pareidolia builds companies that apply Governance Fidelity Theory to domains where intent degradation is acute and measurable.

Each company addresses the same underlying phenomenon in a different system:

Equilateral preserves intent in software agent systems through structural authority architecture.

Raknor independently verifies that governance claims in autonomous systems are real.

MindMeld preserves institutional memory so that intent survives across teams, sessions, and system boundaries.

HappyHippo measures whether workforce decisions remain faithful to leadership intent.

Seawater provides the foundational infrastructure where reliability and observability are structural properties.

The products communicate solutions. Pareidolia communicates the pattern that explains why those solutions are necessary.
